Progressive Insurance Fights Against Distracted Driving
Distracted driving has increased over the years, with the increase of drivers on the road every day this can become an issue that may get out of hand. New laws have surfaced to counter this although that doesn’t prevent accidents and close calls that are caused by distracted driving. Distracted driving predominantly happens when a driver is distracted when using a handheld device such as a mobile phone. Distracted driving is a broad topic and can be categorized in many different ways and many drivers can be interpreted differently. Overall distracted driving takes the drivers attention away from the road which compromises their ability to reach in key situations.
As a driver, there are different things you can do to keep yourself safe and ensure you have full attention on the road. One simple tactic is keeping your phone on silent or in do not disturb mode.
Since the rise of distracted driving, many companies have come together to prevent such an act. Offering rewards and incentives to help keep the roads safer is one prime strategy today.
Telemotion a smartphone telematics platform has announced that they will be working with Progressive insurance as well as Penn Medicine. Together these companies will be working together to investigate and find strategies to help reduce distracted driving on the road today. They are going to focus on all the effects of distracted driving due to mobile phones and what interventions they can provide to reduce it. Currently, these interventions will be focusing on nudging the user’s smartphones to prevent and reduce distracted driving.
A 1.84 million dollar grant has been given to Penn medicine provided to them by the Federal Highway Administration to perform this study.
They will integrate the innovative Progressive snapshot program. This intervention program will be selected at random for any of the distracted driving interventions. This study will be based on customer behaviors proven by the studies conducted. So what do these interventions consist of? Here is a list of what they will be testing:
- Silencing Notifications while driving
- Providing demographic benchmarks for any distracted driving
- Offering financial incentives for not using your phone
Distracted driving is a huge concern for many. A lot of the time it may be done out of innocence but it can be extremely costly and at times deadly. It takes drivers attention off the road which in turn takes the drivers eye off the road, they can miss critical events on the road, objects all of these can factor into a vehicle accident. Statistics presented by The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration has estimated that distracted driving takes the lives of about 3450 people each year. Although the number can be much higher. On a given day American travel about 3.3 miles in their car distracted and can text about 6 minutes while they are driving. 8.9 million drivers are distracted which amount to about 3.9% of drivers in the US. These drivers spend approximately 50 percent of their time driving on the road.
